First steps, trip to the vets, first binky

So I just wanted to give you an update on our 2 little white bunnies. Today little pink (we call them pink and blue after their eye colour as they don't have names yet) went to see a vet about his nose. As you can see from the picture below it looks horrible and it does make it hard for him to breathe, it had been treated with some antibiotics before he came to us but didn't make the mysterious bogies stop forming. So after after seeing the vet today he is back on the Baytril (the only antibiotic licenced for rabbits); he is now on double his original dose, twice a day, for 3 times as long, as well as an antibiotic cream. The vet we spoke to felt that his condition was an immune response to some unknown bacteria or allergen. I'm not totally convinced but the antibiotics should at least give him some relief.
when the vet listened to his chest she was truly puzzled as his heart rate was unusually low, lower even than a cat, she was actually able to count it at around 120 bpm. Just to give you some context the average heart rate of a rabbit at rest is 140-180 bpm, add stress to that, like say a trip to the vet and it should be even faster up to 300 bpm!
He is also a little skinnier than we would like, fighting an illness can take a lot of energy and as they both have very sensitive tummies they are on a primarily hay diet. We have also added alfalfa fodder bricks for them as these are great for under weight and young bunnies (but I wouldn't recommend them for healthy adult rabbits, as they will easily get fat) His current weight is 1.1Kg and we will monitor this as we continue with his treatment.

After the vets it was time to give their hutch a full clean and disinfect. Hygiene is super important the sick and convalescing. So for the first time we let them out in the pet room to run around.
It was amazing, whilst little pink was quite happy to just sit inside and have the nugget bowl to himself, until I actually had to move him out of the way. Blue was having a great time.
As far as we know, they have never been in anything larger then their cage, their hutch in the pet is twice as big as the pen they had in the shop and this was first time out exploring.
My heart melted when blue actually did his first binky! but he did also wee all over pink, poor thing. Blue was so excited that he was actually wagging his tail. I wasn't able to get as many pictures as I hoped as he just wouldn't stay still. Eventually even pink came out and started looking around.
Check in with us again to find out how they're doing.
